東京から約 1 時間、茨城県の筑波山周辺を訪れます。
その昔、「西の富士、東のつくば」と称された筑波山。関東平野にそびえたち、遠くからでも見えることから、古くから多くの和歌や絵の題材になってきました。
筑波山周辺からは良質な花崗岩が産出し、加工された石材は、東京駅前の石畳にも使われるほど良質です。また、この花崗岩質の土壌で濾過され染み出た地下水は、お酒造りにとっても質がよく、この地域では昔から酒造りが栄えました。水はけのよい地域であることから、山桜の名所としても名をとどろかせてきました。
さらには、こんな逸話も。
太古の神様が各地を巡り歩いていた際、富士山のふもとで日が暮れてしました。富士の神に1泊の宿をお願いしたところ、新嘗祭の最中で、他人を泊めることはできないと断られてしまいました。困った神様が、筑波山を訪れたところ、本当は泊めることはできないが、困っているからとおもてなしを受けることができました。このことから富士山は雪の積もる、人の行きづらい山となり、筑波山は1年中、雪が降らず、人の行き交う山となったそうです。
