We experienced the depth of sake amidst the snowy scenery of Gunma
On February 8th, continuing from last year, we organized a one-day brewery and industrial experience tour for Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) residing in Japan, commissioned by the National Tax Agency. This time, we visited Asama Sake Brewery in Gunma Prefecture with 13 ALTs from the United States, Canada, and other countries.

President Sakurai of Asama Sake Brewery kicked off the tour with an overview of sake brewing. He explained how their high-altitude location makes it challenging to maintain a consistent steaming temperature of 100°C for the rice, and demonstrated the innovative methods they use to ensure proper steaming.

The group then enjoyed a “sake tasting quiz” featuring five varieties of sake, which sparked lively discussions about similarities and differences between sake and wine.

Originally, we planned to visit Kusatsu Onsen afterward, but unexpected heavy snowfall forced us to change our route. Instead, we toured the Yamba Dam and later relaxed in a nearby footbath. The ALTs shared many positive impressions, including newfound respect for the depth of sake culture and enthusiasm for exploring more about Japanese traditions. It was a highly rewarding day for us as guides, and we look forward to further opportunities to introduce Japan’s rich heritage to an even wider audience.
