About
Katori, which faces the Tone River, one of Japan's great rivers, has been called a "water town" since ancient times and has developed thanks to the abundant blessings of this river.
The Sawara area in particular prospered due to river traffic to Edo, and the beauty of its streets, which were sung about as "Sawara Honmachi Better than Edo," continues to attract many people from both Japan and abroad, thanks to its easy access, about an hour and a half from Tokyo and about 30 minutes from Narita Airport.
Through Yukari, you can embark on a journey to experience the slow pace of life in the Sawara region, a region steeped in the romance of history, and the bountiful blessings of water that have supported its development.
[Example itinerary]
~DAY 1~
We depart Tokyo Station and head to Sawara Water Village along the Tone River.
We head to the Sawara area on a sappa-style tourist boat and leisurely cruise down the river while taking in the views of the townscape brimming with Edo atmosphere.
After disembarking, you will change into a kimono and stroll around the town with a local guide, learning about the history of Sawara, a town that once enjoyed such prosperity that even the famous Katsu Kaishu came here to raise funds.
Visit the home of Ino Tadataka, affectionately known as "Chukei-san" in Sawara, who completed the first map of Japan based on actual measurements, and reflect on his life, in which he continued surveying until he was 71 years old.
After checking into the hotel, why not head out to enjoy a night stroll around the city? Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, a unique flow of time awaits you.
~DAY 2~
Sawara is home to two sake breweries, Tokun Sake Brewery and Baba Honten Sake Brewery, both of which have histories dating back to the Edo period. The sake brewed by each brewery using groundwater that springs from the alluvial plateau has long been loved by local people.
Sawara is also famous as a city of eels, and while walking around the town, you'll find yourself stopping in your tracks at the mouth-watering aroma of grilled eel.
There are also many other varieties of shaved ice, as well as perfect souvenirs such as warabimochi and monaka, so finding your favorite treat is part of the fun.
On the tour, you can enjoy the bounty of this rich water while touring and experiencing the sake brewery and savoring an array of delicious delicacies.
